SunshineLawCitizen.org is a people-powered platform where everyday citizens shine a light on local government—and demand better public services, more transparency, real accountability from elected officials, and sharper scrutiny of how our tax dollars are spent.
This movement was born from lived experience. What began as one woman’s fight in Parker, Florida has grown into a laboratory for civic empowerment, watchdog journalism, and public records advocacy. We’ve seen firsthand how local governments respond—sometimes with transparency, often with obstruction—when citizens ask simple questions and request the facts.
We document real case studies from our city laboratory of Parker, Florida to spotlight how public records requests can help you understand what’s happening in your community, track how your city spends your money, and make sure your voice is heard. These stories reveal not just the issues, but the pushback: retaliation, delays, denials, and the tactics used to discourage oversight. We show you the tools and templates you can use to get information. And when the system breaks down, we’ll share where you can go when your questions aren’t being answered.
We use storytelling, podcasts, documentation, and constitutionally protected expression to expose injustice and empower other citizens to do the same. Because we are not alone—and neither are you.
We welcome your case studies and real-life examples of using your state’s Sunshine Laws— whether you succeeded or faced challenges. Let’s learn from each other. We’ll also spotlight courageous citizens whose actions inspire others to stand up and speak out.
And don’t forget to nominate a “Sunshine Hero”—someone (maybe even you!) who used sunshine laws to uncover the truth, held officials accountable, and made local government better. Whether it’s exposing wasteful spending, correcting the record, or simply asking questions, we celebrate citizens who turn knowledge into action.
We’re building a community of everyday watchdogs — citizens who use sunshine laws to uncover the facts, understand what their local governments and elected officials are doing, and speak up with confidence. By sharing real stories and learning from each other, we empower one another to stand for a better government — one rooted in truth, accountability, and the public good.
